First Annual WOBC Block Party a Resounding Success

WOBC community block party/>

This past Saturday, the Oberlin community gathered in Oberlin’s Park Street Park for WOBC’s first annual Block Party. Some of WOBC’s best DJs were on hand, broadcasting live from the park as others competed in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament or chowed down on delicious barbecued food. Even the skies couldn’t stop the fun when the fiercest b-ball competitors played right through the rain for fame and glory.

Stay tuned for more WOBC events in the next month and over the summer. And if you haven’t already, start working on your game for next year’s block party.

WOBC Rohirrim (a softball team) ride again! Defeat Dingleberry’s 16-14

Where now the horse and the rider? where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harp-string, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?

ANSWER: On the fields of the North, where the WOBC Rohirrim have again defeated an opponent in come-from-behind fashion. Like true warriors, the Rohirrim battled back from an 8-1 deficit with solid hitting by Devra Freelander ( yacht haus), Josh Davidson (Shout Bamalama!), and Peter Freeman (World of Wrestling). Key fielding was contributed by Brian “scoops” Becker (Bumps) and Adrian “aint no thing” Rew (Ever look at a softball and hate it?) saved the game with a snag at second in the sixth.

David “Burn ‘em” Burnham (That Gum You LIke), Leo “HGH” Famulari (In the Basement), and Sir William Floyd (cyclesthapartwontwentyten) had key HITS.

Key at-bat: As the Rohirrim pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth, Molly “Burning Bridges” Stein hit a grounder that drove in a run and kept the inning alive. CLUTCH.

THe rohirrim’s next game is this Friday @ 4:45pm – vs Sigglemetimbers (whatever that means).

WOBC ROHIRRIM: 2-0 (first place). WHODATHUNKIT?!

The WOBC Rohirrim (A Softball Team) defeat Suang Mansion 12-10 in Season Opener

WOBC Rohirrim

Arise now, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

And with those words, the WOBC Rohirrim, a ragtag bunch of softball players who might just have what it takes, began their season.

The opponents, the Fanged Banshees (or, as they insisted on being called, Suang Mansion), were admirable, but were nevertheless easily dispatched. Also, we play with swords and ride horses, which SOME might argue give us an advantage. Those SOME have been SPOKEN WITH (i.e. sworded).

Down 9-6 in the bottom of the Sixth, with two on and two out, Catcher and WOBC Treasurer Will Floyd made an amazing snag on a fouled third strike, spurring the team into action.

In the top of the 7th the Rohirrim unleashed their fury scoring 6 runs on amazing hitting by DJ’s Scott Goodwin (ASTROFRACTALS/ DANKGNARR), Brian Becker (Bumps), Josh Davidson (Shout Bamalama!), and Peter Freeman (World of Wrestling). Station Manager Jesse Montgomery added a hit and some stellar base-running, while Miami slugger and Operations Manager Leo Famulari connected on an extra-base hit.

Clutch at-bat of the night: DJ Melissa Decker (My Heart is Full) worked the count and drove in the game-tying run, bringing her lifetime total of Runs Batted In (RBI) to one.

FINAL SCORE: WOBC ROHIRRIM 12, FANGED BANSHEES 10.

Next game is Friday afternoon, more details forthcoming.
